JOURNEY inward with Medicine Horse

Embodied Awareness. Guided by Horse. Rooted in Nature.

A Journey Inward with Medicine Horse begins with a simple premise: most of us have learned to live from the outside in. This work invites a return to the inside out through relationship, presence, and the quiet intelligence of Horse.

Horses live in absolute presence. Rooted in their bodies, attuned to their environment, and in constant acceptance of what is. Their way of being reflects an ideal model of internal–external congruence and offers unparalleled opportunities for humans to cultivate whole-being awareness, accountability, and authentic communication.

Since their domestication, horses have journeyed beside humankind, shaping our advancement and evolution into the modern era. Through this shared history, they now stand in a profound position to guide us inward –offering a paradigm-shifting understanding of what it means to live in congruence, where body, awareness, and action move as one.

These horse-human offerings are held as a field for exploration, where the journey itself is the destination. By meeting horses without agenda, by listening rather than directing, we enter an honest encounter with ourselves. What emerges is not who we should become, but who we already are when we stop overriding our own knowing.

Your Journey Inward with Medicine Horse is a relational practice. It asks you to show up, listen, and choose honestly. What follows is coherence, not as a concept, but as a way of living.

"The art of innerstanding our present landscape is the gateway to understanding with the Horse."

CHOICE Horsemanship

choice · the return of autonomy and free will to the horse
horsemanship · practical skill with a horse, learned through feel and presence

CHOICE Horsemanship is built around real, practical skills: safety around horses, routine care, groundwork, riding (you'll need your own horse), and problem solving. Every bit of it is grounded in equine ethology and cognition, because good horsemanship starts with understanding how horses actually think and experience the world. From there, students learn awareness-based communication and the wisdoms horses have to offer, developing the ability to communicate through feel instead of force. That shift changes more than riding. It changes how you show up in the rest of life.

This program welcomes every level, from your very first time around a horse to years in the saddle. Some students are just starting to look for a relationship with a horse. Others already have one and want to go deeper. Each person is met wherever they're starting from.

At the center of it all is the horse's curiosity, character, and capability. There's no dominance taught to the human, and no submission asked from the horse. Instead, the focus is presence: showing up with awareness, taking accountability, and respecting that every horse is on its own journey.

This is a relationship, not a transaction. It's a long-term commitment, and what you get out of it depends on what you put in. Every session unfolds organically, guided by the horse, the student, and whatever the moment brings, drawing on grounding, breath, movement, visualization, and sensory practice.

what students gain from CHOICE Horsemanship:

∙ Hands-on horsemanship skills including safety around horses, daily care and handling, groundwork, and riding on your own horse, built through real practice, not just theory

∙ Sharper ability to read equine behavior and problem-solve in the moment, whether in the barn, the arena, or out on the trail

∙ Clear, nonverbal communication with your horse developed through timing, body awareness, and feel

∙ Genuine confidence in horse-human spaces earned through skill and practice

∙ A deeper, more trusting partnership with your horse grounded in cooperation instead of control

equine experiential · learning through direct experience with horses
innerstanding · knowing that arises from lived, internal awareness

This framework shapes how every session unfolds, through direct experience, meeting both horse and human as they are, and allowing insight to arise through what is happening between them.

Students often arrive with a specific concern: a horse who bites or feels unsafe to be around, a lack of engagement or presence, difficulty with trailer loading, a young horse they wish to bring up with choice at the foundation, or a horse carrying the effects of past training, trauma, or abuse. These concerns matter, and they are welcomed here. Real-life behavior and safety concerns like these are met with care and curiosity, not reduction.

At its core, though, the concern is understood as an entry point, not the whole picture. Rather than isolating a single behavior or goal, this approach looks at the concern as part of a larger relational landscape, one where underlying dynamics can be seen and reorganized, rather than addressed in isolation. What appears as an issue is approached as information, pointing toward where connection, clarity, or fit is asking to be restored.

The horse participates as a conscious being in this process, and guides much of it directly. Through movement, response, and proximity, the horse offers clear, present-moment feedback about how the relationship is being experienced, feedback that helps clarify what supports connection and what interrupts it. This helps reveal where something is misaligned, where energy is held or fragmented, and where a different arrangement may allow greater ease, trust, and congruence.

At the center of it all is InnerStanding: the capacity to recognize what is known from within. As the student is supported in slowing down, listening more fully, and sensing what is true in their own body and experience, new ways of relating become possible. Change emerges not through fixing or forcing, but through rearranging the pieces until the relationship begins to fit. As awareness expands, trust, ease, and mutual understanding can grow, within the horse-human relationship and beyond it.

Over time, this core shapes horsemanship grounded in choice, mutual respect, and shared participation. The effects often extend beyond the original concern, shaping how you listen, respond, and relate, not only with your horse, but across life.

Community Learning

Thanks to the gift of technology, we get to learn, explore, and expand together as one global herd. Distance doesn’t separate us anymore, it just makes our circle wider. Our Community Learning offerings are where horse-human relationship continues to deepen, soften, and weave itself into everyday life through shared experience.

Most of this unfolding happens inside our living school the Mind Body Barn by CHOICE Tribe. It’s our virtual barn, our gathering fire, our place to meet in real time and grow side-by-side. This is where we listen, reflect, stretch, and remember that we’re not walking this journey alone.

At the same time, this work is also rooted in the land and the living herd. Many of these Community Learning opportunities are experienced in person at the sanctuary in Central Oregon, where the teachings come alive through direct connection: with the horses, the body, and the land itself. Whether online or in person, the thread is the same: presence, relationship, and embodied learning.

If you feel the pull toward this work, the Mind Body Barn becomes a natural next step as an anchor point for your growth and connection. It’s the heartbeat of the choice tribe the space where the understanding becomes lived, where the herd connection becomes felt, and where you truly become part of the tribe.

You can learn more about each of our Community Learning offerings below, and when you’re ready to explore them in a deeper, more embodied way (online or at the sanctuary) we invite you into the Mind Body Barn. Joining is free, and it’s the easiest way to get a true feel for the path ahead.
